Barack Obama has called on the House of Representatives to pass the climate change bill in the hope that it would lead to millions of jobs; exactly what is needed in a bid to climb out of recession.
It is likely that the House will vote as early as tomorrow and the President has described the new bill as historic, as it will "open the door to a new energy economy." There is growing concern within the white house that interest in the bill is falling. The Republicans are mainly against the bill as they ague that it will amount to huge hikes in energy tax. Billionaire Warren Buffett has also stoked the fire by critisizing the bill. The bil is a whopping 1,200 pages long but simply speaking Obama has presented it as vital to both US national security and the future of the environment. There is a renewed fear that the US is dependent upon foreign oil and so energy security and job creation go hand in hand to protect the economy. The bill is however a realization that US policy on climate change is archaic and that carbon pollution is not only real but an urgent problem. The bill is in keeping with the American Clean Energy and Security Act which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 17 percent by 2020.
