A European diplomat has said that the G8 will call on Tehran to resolve its crisis over post-election violence through democratic dialogue.
G8 ministers will also call on the Iranian government to ensure that the "will of the Iranian people is reflected in the electoral process". This is part of the G8 statement that is set to be released later today. The statement is a compromise between countries wanting to send a tough message to Iran and countries, like Russia, that are anxious to be dimplomatic to ensure possible talks with Iran over its nuclear program. The statement also urges Iran to "respect fundamental rights, including freedom of expression". Iran has accused Britain and America, two G8 members, of provoking the street protests. The other issue with Iran is over its nuclear program. Iran says it wants nuclear technology to generate electricity, although many countries believe it is because they want nuclear weapons. The June 25-27 Trieste G8 meeting was a chance for the powers to discuss with Iran and others the shared goals for Afghanistan and Pakistan. However, Iran declined Italy's invitation to attend.
