The constitution established that Congress was to be bicameral. This means that there would be two chambers or houses : the House of Representatives and the Senate. It also created the executive branch of the presidency. Various facts: Article I - Members of the House of Representatives are elected every 2 years.
- For those who are to sit in the House, the constitution requires them to meet these qualifications; they must be over 25 years old, a citizen of the US for 7 years and they have to be an inhabitant of the state they represent.
- The number of representatives from each state depends on the state's population.
- The terms of office for senators is 6 years.
- The constitution requires those who are to be senators to have the qualifications - they have to be 30 years old, they have to live in the US and they have to live in the state they represent for 9 years.
- 2 senators represent each state.
Article II - President and vice-president are elected every 4 years.
- Constitution specifies that the president must be at least 35 years old, have been a US resident for at least 14 years and have been born in the US.
There are different election cycles for the presidency, the House of Representatives and the Senate in order to safeguard the government from mass opinion making and unwise decision, so that they can act as a check on eachother and so that they remain separate bodies.
